Refinishing of a slaughtered Telecaster body .

As you can see on the picture, that Tele body has been badly damaged by a very poor "do it yourself" paint job.The original color (a sunburst from what s left in the pick ups rounting) has been stripped down. Doing so, some deep tool marks have been made in the wood. Friendly reminder you don t have to use sledgehammers and chainsaw to strip the varnish of a guitar body. Too deep to be sanded down, these holes and dings will need to be filled properly with a special epoxy based resin. You can still see the yellowish and grey stains from the poor "spray-can and paintbrush "previous job ...
Once the major reshaping work is done the body is now ready to be sprayed, starting with a white "PU" undercoat. Unless I am working on a very special restoration, i would generally prefer Polyurethane or Polyester undercoats to Nitro, although I would most likely always use a Nitro"clear coat" for the finish that will help the "aging" of the instrument. The undercoat will then be sanded down to a very smooth surface (400 to 800 grit). Any scratches, ding or wrong curves will show if the undercoat and colored basecoat isn t perfect especially if you are planning to spray a metallic or see through color.

 To be continued !!!

Get ready !!!
